The Watchman on the Wall

In the tower stands a man
Eyes fixed on the horizon
Watching
Waiting
Nothing catches him by surprise.

He calls to the people below
Sleep safely tonight
I am here
There is nothing
For you to fear
I am the watchman on the wall

No threat awaits in the night
Moving shadows
Out of sight
Hidden
Lurking
Ready to begin the fight

The dawn comes with the wind
Gently blowing again
Another night
Came to an end
The city defended
By the faithful watchman

God’s watchman on the wall
Watching, ready to call
Charged by Heaven above
Devoted, protecting with his love.

While he guards, the people rest
Trusting, and blessed
The lovers sing, the children play
No threatening dragons to be slayed

Another day another time
We awake to find
We’re surrounded
We’re confined
Watchman defected
Slipped out and resigned.

We grope in the dark
To find our way
Too weak
To pray
The watchman
Left us, and ran away

Where are the watchmen on the wall
Watching, ready to call
Charged by Heaven above
Devoted, protecting with his love?

Guarding so the people can rest
Trusting, and blessed
The lovers sing, the children play
No threatening dragons to be slayed

But the Watchmen are now quiet
Lost their nerve for the fight

There’s no watchman on the wall
Watching, ready to call
Dark clouds now surround
Thunder and lightning all around

Sin crept in like a flood
Watchmen worried about livelihood
Spotless garments covered with mud
Ashamed to mention Jesus’ blood

Billboard says, “Alive and kickin”
Spirit says, “Dead and twitchin.”
It’s apostasy, the falling away
When Watchmen watch for pay

We need humble, broken men
To watch for the church again.
Guarding children, husbands, wives
Ready to lay down their lives.
